Wintertime in Chicagoland means beautiful snowfalls, sipping hot chocolate at Park Cafe, and gliding around the ice at a nearby rink. When you are ready to lace up a pair of skates, grab someone special and get ready to fall in love on the ice! The best spots to go ice skating near Evanston include:
Robert Crown Community Center
Since 1974, the Robert Crown Community Center has been an important social and recreational hub for the city of Evanston. It features an NHL-sized rink and is a valuable venue for both hockey and figure skating.
Open skating sessions are available throughout the week. The center also offers lessons for anyone between the ages of three and adult. Trained instructors lead every class and they take participants from beginning steps through advanced freestyle levels.
Centennial Ice Rink
Named the number one ice rink by the readers of Northshore Magazine, Centennial offers 25 hours of open freestyle sessions every week. It is a member of the United States Figure Skating Association and is home to both the Loyola University Hockey Club and the Wilmette Cougars Women’s Hockey Club. Visitors can rent skates for a nominal fee, and a concessions stand offers a variety of refreshments.
Nestled on more than three acres, the Watts Center features two lighted outdoor rinks. They’re open daily through March 1st, and the cost for adults is $8 plus skate rental (if necessary). In addition to the public sessions, visitors of all ages can also enjoy lessons, open hockey, and a fun game called broomball. Broomball is similar to hockey in both its formation and rules but also incorporates some soccer strategies.
